Answers to some of the common questions we get asked about our services
What commercial coating services do you provide?
Halston works on projects from approximately 80 m² (a substantial private apartment or single-room interior architecture) through to 1,500 m² (a fully bespoke private residence or substantial heritage renovatWe provide commercial and industrial spraying, cladding coatings, roof coatings, steelwork coatings, floor coatings, specialist surface preparation, line marking and protective finishes for operational sites.ion). Our typical residential project is 200 to 600 m². We are selective about smaller projects and accept them only where the brief and client relationship justify the studio's full engagement. Home staging engagements are sized per residence.
Do you work with main contractors and facilities teams?
Our design process moves through six clearly defined stages: initial brief and site analysis, concept design, developed design, technical design, construction stage administration, and post-completion review. Each stage concludes with a formal sign-off meeting and a deliverable that the client approves before the next stage begins. The full process is described in our practice handbook, which is shared with every client at engagement.
Can you work on live occupied sites?
Yes. Planning permissions, listed building consents, and the broader heritage and statutory approvals form part of our standard architectural service. We coordinate directly with local planning authorities, heritage offices, and specialist consultants including planning consultants, heritage advisers, and ecology surveyors. On projects outside our home markets we work with locally licensed planning consultants where required.
Do you provide site surveys before quoting?
Yes. Halston is based in Berlin and Hamburg and works with private and institutional clients on projects in diverse international markets. We coordinate with consultant partners on site as required, and international projects are run from the office closest to the project location.
How do you price commercial coating projects?
Every engagement begins with an initial consultation, in person or online, to understand the brief, the site, and the client's ambitions. From there, we prepare a tailored proposal covering recommended scope, fees, programme, and team structure for approval. We can begin work once the appointment is signed and the initial fee is settled.
Can you work outside normal business hours?
Project timelines vary by scope and complexity. A private residence typically runs 24 to 36 months from initial brief to handover. A heritage renovation runs 18 to 36 months depending on consents. An interior architecture project runs 6 to 18 months. Home staging engagements run 1 to 4 weeks. Material consultations run 2 to 6 weeks. We provide a detailed programme estimate after the initial project consultation.
Are your teams insured and accredited?
Halston provides architectural and interior architecture services across six specialist offerings: residential architecture, interior architecture, heritage renovation, hospitality interiors, home staging and property styling, and material consultation. The studio is based in Berlin and Hamburg and works with private and institutional clients across diverse markets.
Can you supply RAMS and site documents?
Yes. We can prepare risk assessments, method statements, product data, COSHH information, training records and insurance details required before works begin.
What areas do you cover?
We cover London, the South East and surrounding counties, with teams able to travel for suitable commercial and industrial projects.
What preparation is included before spraying or coating?
Preparation can include cleaning, degreasing, masking, sanding, mechanical abrasion, corrosion treatment, priming and specialist blasting depending on the surface and coating system.
Do you offer adhesion testing?
Yes. Adhesion testing can be carried out where required to confirm that the proposed coating system is suitable for the existing substrate and site conditions.
Can you match existing colours or brand colours?
Yes. We can work to common colour systems and brand-led colour requirements, subject to coating availability and the surface being treated.
How long do coatings last?
Service life depends on substrate condition, preparation, exposure, coating system and maintenance. We recommend suitable systems based on the environment and performance required.
What affects the programme length?
Programme length is influenced by preparation, access, weather, drying times, number of coats, working restrictions and whether the site must remain operational during works.
Can you phase works around operations?
Yes. We can divide works into zones, elevations, shifts or agreed phases to help keep entrances, loading bays, warehouses and offices functioning during the project.
Do you spray cladding on site?
Yes. On-site cladding spraying is a core service and can be used to refresh tired elevations, change colour schemes or extend the life of existing panels.
Can faded cladding be restored instead of replaced?
In many cases, yes. If the panels are sound, cleaning, preparation and a suitable coating system can transform the appearance at a lower cost than replacement.
Do you treat cut edge corrosion?
Yes. Cut edge corrosion treatment can be included as part of roof coating works to address vulnerable sheet edges before applying protective coatings.
Do you coat commercial roofs?
Yes. We can coat commercial and industrial roofs using suitable systems for weathering, refurbishment, corrosion protection and longer-term asset maintenance.
What weather conditions affect external coatings?
External coatings are affected by rain, wind, surface moisture, temperature and humidity. We plan around forecast windows and product requirements to protect the finish.
Which services can be carried out all year round?
Internal services such as steelwork coatings, hygienic coatings, plant room coatings, floor coatings, dry ice blasting and some preparation works can often continue year-round indoors.
Do you provide abrasive blasting?
Yes. We can specify abrasive blasting options for steel, masonry and industrial surfaces where deeper preparation, coating removal or profile creation is required.
When is dry ice blasting useful?
Dry ice blasting is useful where a low-residue cleaning method is needed, including machinery, production areas, fire damage, sensitive substrates and areas where water use is limited.
Can you apply intumescent coatings to steelwork?
Yes. Intumescent coating systems can be applied to suitable steelwork where a fire protection specification is required, supported by the correct preparation and documentation.
Do you install industrial floor coatings?
Yes. We can provide durable floor coating systems for warehouses, workshops, plant rooms, loading areas and back-of-house commercial environments.
Can you provide line marking and safety zoning?
Yes. Line marking can be added for walkways, forklift routes, loading zones, pedestrian areas, hazard zones and operational safety layouts.
Do you coat plant rooms or M&E areas?
Yes. Plant rooms, service areas and M&E spaces can be treated with protective coatings designed for durability, cleanliness and planned maintenance.
Can you repaint roller shutters and loading bays?
Yes. Roller shutters, loading bay doors, dock areas and service entrances can be prepared and coated to improve appearance and protect high-use areas.
Do you offer anti-graffiti coatings?
Yes. Anti-graffiti coatings can be specified for vulnerable elevations, shutters, entrances and public-facing surfaces to make future cleaning easier.
Do you provide hygienic wall and ceiling coatings?
Yes. Hygienic coatings are suitable for food, healthcare, manufacturing and clean operational spaces where wipeable, durable finishes are required.
How do you manage access equipment?
Access requirements are assessed during survey and may include towers, MEWPs, scaffolding, edge protection or other safe systems depending on the building and scope.
Are IPAF and PASMA trained operatives available?
Yes. Trained operatives can be provided where mobile access platforms, towers or site-specific access arrangements are required.
How do you control overspray?
Overspray is controlled through masking, sheeting, exclusion zones, weather checks, spray technique, containment and selecting the correct application method for the site.
How do you protect nearby surfaces?
We protect surrounding areas with masking, coverings, screening and careful sequencing, with particular attention to glazing, signage, vehicles, floors and public areas.
What happens if weather delays external work?
If weather delays external coatings, we keep the programme under review, protect prepared areas where needed and rearrange works around the next suitable weather window.
Can you provide warranties?
Warranty options depend on the coating system, substrate condition, preparation standard and environment. We can discuss suitable warranty routes during specification.
How should clients maintain coated surfaces?
Most coated surfaces benefit from routine cleaning, prompt repair of damage and periodic inspections. We can advise on maintenance based on the coating system used.
Can you help with specifications?
Yes. We can help identify suitable preparation, primers, topcoats, finish levels and maintenance considerations for commercial and industrial coating requirements.
Do you provide photos or reports after work?
Yes. Completion photos, progress updates and basic handover information can be provided where required for client records, contractor reporting or facilities teams.
How do we start a project?
Send the location, photos, drawings or a brief description of the works. We can then arrange a call or survey and advise on scope, specification and next steps.
