Project Challenges and Solutions

Removable blackout requirement
The brief called for full light exclusion without permanently altering the building fabric. To achieve this, the skylights were prepared with a peelable base coating before a high-build vinyl topcoat was applied to create the blackout effect. This gave the client the performance they needed for the theatre period while keeping future removal straightforward.

Coverage and colour depth
Because the selected finish was lighter than a standard black blackout coating, the skylights required careful build-up to stop light transmission. Multiple coats were applied methodically until the team achieved complete, even coverage across each pane.

Working at height
The skylights measured around 18m by 8m and sat on a sloped roof line, with working heights ranging from roughly 9m to 15m. IPAF-trained operatives used scissor lifts to reach the full surface safely and maintain consistent application across the angled sections.

Three-day programme
The theatre fit-out schedule left only a short window before equipment installation began. A ten-person team worked extended shifts over three days, allowing preparation, coating and inspection to be completed without compromising the finish.

Health and safety
Spraying at height in a large warehouse environment required tight controls. RAMS were agreed before work started, with appropriate PPE, respiratory protection, access planning and daily briefings in place throughout the project.

Process

The team began by preparing the work area, setting out access equipment and confirming the safety plan. Once the skylights were ready, a peelable base layer was applied to support later removal. The blackout coating was then built up in controlled passes, with the spray technique adjusted for the roof angle and the scale of the glazing.

After application, the team carried out light checks and a final inspection to confirm the skylights were fully blacked out. The work was completed within the agreed three-day window and handed over ready for the temporary theatre installation.

Results

The warehouse was transformed into a theatre-ready space with complete daylight control through the skylights. The coating system delivered the blackout performance required while remaining removable, protecting the building from permanent alteration. The project was completed safely, on time and under a demanding programme, with the client receiving a clean, practical solution for a temporary venue.

Project Challenges & Solutions

Achieving a Removable Blackout Solution

  • The client needed full light blockage, but the paint had to be peelable for easy removal after six months.
  • Solution: We used Mipa Peelable Booth Coating as a base layer, followed by a high-build vinyl topcoat for enhanced durability.

High Paint Consumption Due to Colour Choice

  • The client opted for a lighter colour rather than full black, which required significantly more paint to achieve complete light blockage.
  • Solution: We meticulously applied multiple coats to ensure 100% blackout coverage.

Height & Access Challenges

  • The skylights were positioned at a steep angle, ranging from 9m to 15m high, making access difficult.
  • Solution: Our IPAF-certified team used scissor lifts, ensuring safe and efficient coverage at all angles.

Strict Three-Day Completion Deadline

  • The client’s timeline was non-negotiable, with only three days available before theatre equipment installation.
  • Solution: We operated in shifts with 10 operatives working 12-hour days, ensuring timely completion without compromising quality.

Health & Safety Considerations

  • Working at height and prolonged exposure to spray coatings required strict safety protocols.
  • Solution: We implemented full RAMS (Risk Assessments & Method Statements), used PPE and respiratory protection, and conducted daily safety briefings.

The Process

Step 1: Site Preparation & Safety Measures
  • Full risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) compliance.
  • Deployment of scissor lifts for safe access to the skylights.
  • Team briefing on safe handling of spray equipment and coatings.
Step 2: Application of Peelable Base Coat
  • Mipa Peelable Booth Coating was applied as a removable base layer.
  • Ensured even coverage for easy removal after six months.
Step 3: High-Build Vinyl Topcoat for Complete Blackout
  • Applied multiple layers to ensure total light blockage.
  • Adjusted spray technique to accommodate the sloped skylight angles.
Step 4: Final Inspection & Client Approval
  • Conducted light tests to confirm zero natural light penetration.
  • Completed within the three-day deadline and received client sign-off with high praise.

The Results

  • 100% blackout achieved, transforming the warehouse into a theatre-ready environment.
  • Fully removable coating, ensuring no permanent changes to the building.
  • Flawless execution under tight time constraints, thanks to 10-man shifts working 12-hour days.
  • Safe & compliant completion, following IPAF and CHAS safety regulations.
